    • Abstract:
The article discusses the emergence of public libraries in Ontario that have funding for anti-poverty initiatives from the federal and provincial governments. The implications of a different way of thinking about what constitutes community prosperity and the benefits of economic growth for the role of libraries in Western life is tackled. The unique role of public libraries in each and every community they serve is also explored.
