    • Abstract:
The majority of issues and controversies surrounding commercialism in college athletics today focus around the revenue generating sports of men's basketball and football at the division one level in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The intent behind comparing mission statements of predominately white institutions conferences and black colleges and universities conferences is to get a more in-depth idea of who they are, what they do, and where they are heading. Only 38.8% of the PWIs and conferences as a whole showed diversity to be a priority of 'who they are' through their mission statements. The results showed a clear distinction of HBCUs focusing more on the student-athlete, more on diversity without the need for business-type core values, and less on generating revenue. This arguably leads into research centered on the racial formation within the NCAA as a macro-level social process. Also, there is little attention paid to the health needs in the colleges' brochures and mission statements. It is anticipated that this study will draw attention to the above-stated lacuna and consequently generate interest in the health needs of college athlete.
