      Highlights •Selenium (Se) concentration is a potential biomarker for assessing Se status at a population level in a low Se-status population.•VZ Variation in urine and plasma Se concentration of women and school aged children in Malawi corresponded between clusters between bet.•Urine Se concentration explained more of the between-cluster variation in plasma Se concentration when data were corrected for hydration status.•UU Urine Se concentration is a less useful biomarker at an individual level.
