    • Abstract:
Collected as part of the wide-ranging Moralia, Plutarch's essay “The Training of Children” provides a set of philosophical guidelines for instilling a high level of virtue in Greek youth. Plutarch argues that a person's character is determined in part even before his or her birth, as the actions and attitudes of his or her parents can encourage or limit physical and cultural development. The author sees the attainment of virtue as the noblest state of being, and one that requires the engagement of the complete community. In order to help young people meet this ideal, he calls for a combination of parental love and guidance, along with formal education in intellectual and physical pursuits. Plutarch's writing helps historians understand the ancient Greeks' vision for their children in society. It also provides a snapshot of the mores and morals that shaped Greek society for many centuries.
