    • Abstract:
The article presents information on a study which says that patterns of housing segregation may play a role in perpetuating racial differences in infant mortality in the United States. In an analysis of 1980 census data from 38 standard metropolitan statistical areas, the average difference in infant mortality rates between blacks and whites was approximately 8.6 deaths per 1,000 live births. A multiple regression analysis included measures of residential segregation, and of racial differences in the proportion of female-headed households, in poverty and in median family income. Only the segregation index was significantly associated with the racial differential in infant mortality rates.
