    • Abstract:
This article deals with the decline in rates of infant mortality in Tennessee during the 1980s. Postneonatal mortality related to prematurity rose substantially among very low birth rate babies, however, suggesting that technological innovation has increased medicine's ability to postpone death rather than to prevent it. A researcher from the U.S. National Center of Statistics analyzed infant mortality data from Tennessee for the periods 1979 to 1983 and 1984 to 1988 and found that overall infant mortality rates fell from 10.2 deaths per 1,000 live births to 8.4 per 1,000. The decline in neonatal mortality was somewhat greater than the decrease in postneonatal mortality. Neonatal mortality rates decreased most among very low birth weight infants, from 332 deaths per 1,000 live births to 252 per 1,000, however, postneonatal mortality among such babies actually rose slightly from 40 deaths per 1,000 to 45 per 1,000.
