    • Abstract:
This article focuses on infant mortality. The U. S. infant mortality rate for 1991 fell below nine deaths per 1,000 live births, the lowest ever recorded. The most recent data from the National Center for Health Statistics show that the number of infant deaths in 1991 was 4% below the 1990 total. The 1991 infant mortality rate of 8.9 deaths per 1,000 births was 3% below the 1990 rate, 9.2 per 1,000. Rates for whiles fell by 4% between 1990 and 1991, from 7.6 to 7.3 per 1,000, but rates among African-American were relatively unchanged at about 18 per 1,000. Infant mortality thus remains about 2.4 times as great among blacks as among whites.
