Local Abstract: [PIP] 41,462 deliveries to 40,777 mothers in general hospitals from 1980-81 were analyzed and it was discerned that the perinatal mortality rate was 37/1000 births. Findings were as follows. 1) The mortality rate was 3 times higher among mothers less than age 19 and above age 40 as compared with the 20-29 year group. 2) The mortality rate was higher in grand multiparas than in primiparas or multiparas. 3) More frequent antenatal visits resulted in a lower mortality rate. 4) Among women with less than 36 weeks gestation, the mortality rate was 334, while that for women with 40-41 weeks was 15. 5) Among women with less than 9 gm hemoglobin level, the mortality rate was 72 while in women with more than a 10 gm rate, the rate was 31. 6) The highest mortality rate was found among breech births (249); 39 in outlet forceps and cesarean section; 35 in spontaneous delivery; and 15 with vacuum extraction. 7) In comparing birthweight, the mortality rate was 222 for those with birthweights lower than 2500 gm while it was 16 for those in the 2500-3999 gm range. Maternal age, parity, antenatal visits, gestational duration, the existence of anemia, delivery type, and babies' birthweights were contributing factors in the determination of the perinatal mortality rate.
